Some of the great things about the new system include:

  1. A new blue and black administrator template theme.
  2. The administrator backend has been simplified and made easier to understand, there are less menu items with more functionality.
  3. Joomla 1.6 now has a 404 redirect URL component build into the backend!
  4. Permission settings on what users can do through the website have been set.
  5. When adding a menu item, you can assign module position variations to that menu item.
  6. Article access rule are now applied so you can set what users can view, edit and publish from menu items.

Joomla 1.6 and ACL

If you are wondering what the hell is ACL! I will give you a brief introduction.

ACL for Joomla! is a simple Access Control List component that helps to restrict front-end access to particular sections.

joomla 1.6 aclACLs can be created for individual users or for a whole Joomla group (registered, author, editor, publisher or manager).

You can specify what actions (insert, read, update) a user (or a Joomla group) can do on the articles belonging to a Joomla section.

There is also limited menu integration: users will only see menu items pointing to articles they have access to.

Now as a part of the joomla core, you can set all of these features, this also comes in handy when running commercial components such as real estate websites or directories, you may only want users to be able to access certain areas of the site according to if they have payed for a subscription.

New Administrator Layout

The new administrator layout looks really nice, the parameters overall layout has been based on a tableless design. I like the new look and feel of the administrator section, it has been needed for a while now, as the green and black was getting a bit bland.

404 redirect

This is a great little built in component which was needed for a while. Any web developer who frequents there google developer or analytics tools will have noticed the plethora of 404 error pages which users have been directed to without seeing any information. This new built in component will now allow you to find those 404 URL's which are receiving traffic and redirect them to the appropriate pages.

Overall I think it has been a well developed upgrade from the joomla! Team I would like to thank them all for there hard work and progress for the joomla! community.
