Well after using the K2 component on a few joomla sites and now soon to implement it on this one, I think I have a good understanding of what it can be used for and the current flaws it has, sorry joomlaworks though it does fall short on a few features!
I will give a run down on why K2 is probably one of the best components on the market for what it can do and how it can be implemented to help build you website with more flexibility. I will run through the good and bad points of this component. THE GOOD
1. Assigning specific details to sub categories.K2 gives administrators the ability to assign features to sub categories from the main category. God knows there have been times when you have imported or created 100's or even 1000's of categories and sub categories and at the end of the process, you have realised you need to change one minor feature which needs to disseminate through the category tree. To save the hassle of re openingeach category again and changing the feature, you can do this from the top level category, e.g. dont show and image or only show a description.
2. User permissions on sign up One of the features I really like about this component is the fact that you can create user groups with different permissions. K2 allows you to set user permissions on - user submission
- user comments
- publishing articles
- editing articles globally
Once you have created different groups along side of different permissions you can click on the K2 user plugin and set the default group which users will be assigned to when they register on your website.
3. In built social bookmarking images and videos Although there are many options out there for this already, K2 for joomla provides this already inbuilt. It allows for tweets, text resizers, social bookmarking, importing videos from 3rd party providers and a few other cool features. 4. Custom fields assigned to categories This has to be the icing on the cake, the most powerful feature on this that i really like is the ability to assign certain fields to categories. Basically if you had users submitting content from the front end, depending on the category they select to submit the content to, you can create a plethora of different field types and options which will differentiate that section from the rest. THE BAD 1. Plugin conflict K2 sometimes conflicts with other plugins which have been installed on your website. I have rokbox installed, and the ajax feature would not work from K2. I only found this out after i had deleted the component and re installed it, I lost everything though maybe telling someone this will also save them the trouble I had to go through. 2. No intergrations At this time K2 doesn't support any external component for intergration, though I am sure in time it will and other developers will release plugins to support K2. Overall I really love this component, it can be used as a directory, user submitted article website, a recipe website, dating, anything you can think of! The future releases of this component will be something I will keep my eye on. Great work again from the joomlaworks.gr team
